When Queen Milliana heard a quick succession of raps at her thick, wooden door, she already knew something had gone wrong.

She sat primly on her throne of intricate wood and gemstones and brushed her long hair from her shoulder.

She wouldn’t show the weakness that her pacing feet and hammering heart gave away.

“Come in,” she commanded. The old oak door slid open with a creak, and the soldier walked inside, grim lines framing his mouth.

He bowed. “My queen, Sundrian, has escaped.”

“Again?” she bit out. Of all the things to be said, she hadn’t predicted this. Immediately at capture, she had all but planted whispers of secret doubts in his mind. Confusing him so she could control his heart.

She had swiftly moved on to beating him within a near inch of his life. Hurting him physically so he would have no strength to escape.

He was surrounded by a dozen of her strongest soldiers. Despite that, he had broken free.

Embarrassed annoyance stirred in her chest.

Her trump card from the beginning had been growing and feeding Sundrian fear. Milliana was determined to convince him that if he misbehaved, his lover would pay the price.

Had she miscalculated? Was he willing to risk his lover’s life? Or had he figured out that all along, he still had the upper hand? More so now that she had seen the goddess’ power first hand.

This was no game. And she had no time for miscalculations. The dark queen did not have the Jewel of Emerald Soul without Sundrian.

She needed it. She needed him.

Storming out of her room, she went to the prison, though she knew she wouldn’t find him. But she hoped to find clues that could showcase her failings.

What she found did indeed terrify her and sent a stream of pain through her chest, and unsteadiness to her feet as she walked along the dark, low-lit corridors.

Silver dust still sparkled along the floor and on the walls. She had seen the sight before. The liquid shinwa flowed in rivers from his hands like a spout directly from the pits of hell. This was her personal hell.

She stepped back, afraid that too deep of a breath would imbed the flecks into her lungs and destroy her on the spot.

The dark queen turned sharply on those thick, well-paced heels and walked out past the forest to return to her room. It felt like admitting defeat, but she knew one thing at least.

He may have gotten away, but she knew he was still there.

Somewhere in her realm. She had assured that much.

It was only a matter of time.

Her heart thrummed with each step she took, each tick of passing time, and the dark queen returned to her throne room, where two thrones stood, but only one sat occupied.
